The ruler of Bijapur ascended the throne after the Bahami Sultans. In the year 1510, the Portuguese invaders banished the entire kingdom of Calangute under the rule of Adil Shah and set up Portuguese colony at Calangute.

The Portuguese ruled this region for quite a long time until the British annexed the entire coastal area of India. A substantial number of the local natives switched their religion to Christianity, under the rule of the Portuguese and the Dutch in Calangute. Even today, one can observe that Portuguese culture greatly influences the natives of Calangute.
